The main reason Teirra Butler chose the College of Southern Maryland was for the nursing program. She knew she could attend school locally for a fraction of the price of a four-year university and get quality training.
What she did not know at first was how much she was going to enjoy the community college. “It’s been great at CSM. I have participated in great student life activities such as the recent FanFest and met some other students with similar interests as mine. More importantly, I have found that the personnel is willing to help you. I’ve even had faculty give me their home phone numbers in case I needed to contact them. I just don’t feel I could have gotten this type of personal attention at a larger institution.” Teirra comments.
“My dream was always to be a nurse practitioner. My CSM classes are making that dream a reality. I have already had the opportunity to work in nursing homes and an area hospital. The chance to work with real nurses brings the textbooks to life. I take vital signs, give baths, distribute medication, hang up IVs on a daily routine. I know now with this work experience that this is the real me. I will enjoy working in healthcare as a full-time employee.”
Teirra plans to finish her associate’s degree in nursing at CSM and then transfer to one of CSM’s university partnerships to complete her bachelor’s degree. CSM makes the transfer process simple and seamless.
She says that the first word that comes to mind when she thinks of CSM is “goal-oriented”. Teirra is well on her way to meeting her goals and CSM is part of her story.
